Neurontin as Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

Q: I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As treatment, my pyshiatrist started me on Neurontin 300mg three times a day. Being a pharmacy technician for many years, I have not heard of this drug being used in the treatment of this disorder. I have surfed all over the web and cannot find any evidence to uphold this to be true. Are you familiar with such treatment and if so can you tell me if this is a proper treatment plan.
