Q: Seeking Info on BP & Young Children
Dr. Phelps-
My 5 year old son has recently been diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder and ADHD.
I am having a difficult time finding information specifically for such a
young child. My goal is to help him and to arm myself with knowledge. He
is currently under the care of a Pediatric Psychiatrist.
I am concerned because as I search for information, I keep running across
scenerios where the child-(older than my son) has had to be hospitalized. I
would like to avoid this if at all possible. I worry about his stability.
Would you be able to point me in the right direction for information on
bi-polar, treatments and information for me that is specifically aimed for a
child that is so young?
I am overwhelmed with the amount of information, yet I am am unable to find the
information I am looking for.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely-
Kathryn
Dear Kathryn --
It's overwhelming, you're right. Have you found www.bpkids.org
yet? That's the best clearinghouse on your question that I know of.
If I may be so bold, I think you might find something useful on my site as well,
for general information about bipolar disorder beyond the basics such as you
could find here. For
example, check out the updates listed on
the home page under BPII; and the section on treatment details within the
material on BPII.
