Q: Which Med Would be Best
Hello Dr. Phelps,
My doc here is wanting to put me onto Olanzapine in addition to my Lithium and
Carbamazepine, and take me off thioridazine. However, I could not afford the
price tag for the Olanzapine, so he put me onto Risperidone as an alternative. I
am not convinced, now, that the latter is working for me, and wonder should I
have made the sacrifices and paid for the Olanzapine. I'm taking the drug to
control several problems including social phobias, mania, thought disorders, to
name a few. In your view, what would be the superior drug of choice?
Grateful for any opinion.
Sarah.
Dear Sarah --
Either can be very helpful in bipolar disorder, although olanzapine has an edge
in that it has more inherent "mood stabilizing" properties, in
my opinion (and I think in the experience of most doc's I know).
