Q: What Causes This Strange Behavior
When I start becoming ill, or having a new episode, I suffer from
overwhelming urges to do ridiculous and dangerous things, such as jump from high
rise buildings, throw myself out of cars, trash shops and houses, physically
assault people. These urges are so overwhelming, and are now again under control
thanks to Olanzapine (I was taken off Thioridazine and the Olanzapine was the
replacement). But what is causing hits strange behaviour? It is not a suicide
bid, and there are no suicidal thoughts. Is it a symptom of mania, or is it a
symptom of mild psychosis? I have experienced this many times, during manic
episodes. I am BipolarI, by the way.
thanks.
Dear Sarah --
Ah, you're on the olanzapine now. Sounds like it helps. Your urges
sound like symptoms from the "manic" side of things. I'm going
to step out of the way and let you and your doctor figure this out now.
Good luck to you both.
Dr. Phelps
