Q:
After coming down from a manic episode, do bipolars remember what
they said and did during the episode?
Dear Ms. R' --
It seems like sometimes the answer is no, or at least complicated, in that
people seem to act as though they don't remember. But in most
people I've worked with, including perhaps especially those who were really ill
with "psychosis" (loss of contact with reality, often to the point of
being unresponsive to us folks in the "real world" when they were
admitted to the hospital), they seem to remember extremely well the
things that happened, including what I said at least if not what they said, even
while it would not have appeared they could possibly understand anything I
said.
I bet there's another question behind your
question, like should your friend/family member be held responsible for
something said or done, or something like that. Please be careful
there. That could be a far more complicated issue, if I'm guessing right,
than whether she/he can remember. Good luck figuring this out (or coping,
trying to accept things, if no figuring is working out).
