Q: Meds & False Negative Pregnancy Test
Dear Dr. Phelps:
I am bipolar and am taking effexor, depokote, clonopin, and trazadone. I
have missed 2 menstrual cycles and have many signs of pregancy, but the blood
tests for pregnancy are coming back negative. I haven't felt this way since my
last pregancy, which was before I was on any medication. My question is: Can
these medications give a false negative on the blood test for pregnancy? Thank
you for your time, Jill
Dear Jill -
Haven't ever heard of a false negative induced
by these medications. However, feeling like there's been some huge
hormonal change, and missing periods, could be related. There's a lot of
concern about Depakote causing something called
polycystic
ovarian syndrome, which could be associated with missed periods and feeling
different (although it may be that it's the thing we're treating with Depakote,
not the Depakote itself, that causes PCOS; or that both are true).
