Q: How Does a Manic Phase Typically End...
A very close friend (age 38) is in the midst of what I believe to be her first
manic phase. She has had all the symptoms of the manic phase of Bipolar
disorder for approx six weeks, but so far has not been to a doctor. I'd like to
know what to expect when she begins coming out of this manic phase. How
does a manic phase typically end or transition into a depressive phase?
Dear Theresa --
There are many variations, so one could not really predict to any significant
degree what you'll see. Bipolar I, with psychosis, can just slowly resolve
back to a person's "old self" without anything else occurring, and
years until the next episode (or never, in some cases). On the other hand,
it is also common to cycle down into a severe depression
afterward.
