Q: Trileptal & Statistics re. SJS or TEN ?
Although Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis were not seen
in controlled clinical trials, there were occurrences in after market use of
Trileptal. Do you have any statistics regarding occurrences of SJS or TEN with
the use of Trileptal? I wrote to the manufacturer (Norvartis I think) asking
this same question, and they replied saying to have a healthcare representative
contact them.
Thanks,
Jen
Dear Jen --
There's a sophisticated question (makes me wonder what event or worry lies
behind it, of course...). Not having written my healthcare representative, I
don't have those numbers either. I haven't heard they're significantly
different from Tegretol (carbamazepine, also from Novartis), because Novartis
took care to point out the differences from Tegretol when Trileptal became
available in the US, and a lower rash rate was not one of those differences (nor
was it said to be higher). Here's an
article that might
get you a ballpark number, or you could start from this
recent review.
