Q: Fertility & Risk to Baby when the Father is Taking Meds
My husband is currently taking 125 mg lamictal, 10 mg zyprexa, 150 mg
effexor, and .5 mg xanax daily. His doctor is still trying to find the
appropriate dosages as he still does not feel well. His doctor believes
eventually (once he's through this episode) my husband will only need to take
lamictal. We have discussed preganancy after this episode. What are the
fertility affects of the above drugs?
Dear Ms. K' --
Well, this is much easier than the situation where you're taking these
medications. As far as I know, there is no evidence that his taking
them will affect fertility or risk some kind of development abnormality to the
baby. If there is such evidence out there, and I'm missing it, at least I
can tell you that there is no current standard of care saying that we need to
check what the father is taking in the way of medications.
