Q: Doc' Asks if the Voices I Hear are Male or Female
Why when you tell the doctor that you have had trouble with hearing voices, do
they immediately ask if it is a male or female voice?
I can't answer them as I am never able to
identify the voices. Is this wrong? does it mean that I am not really hearing
them?
Three different doctors over the years have asked me this and I
would like to know why.

Hi Billie -- The doc' is likely trying to get a sense
of how well-defined the voices you hear are. And sometimes if it's a voice you
know, that might tell us something about the kind of diagnosis we should be
considering; in particular I use this to look for post-traumatic-related
symptoms, if the voice has something to do with the trauma setting (e.g. a
female patient hears a man's voice, and she has a history of sexual abuse).
That's my guess on why those doc's were asking you that one.
